Not long ago, getting your hands on the best tretinoin cream meant scheduling an in-office dermatologist visit, waiting weeks for an appointment, and sitting in a fluorescent-lit waiting room to finally walk out with a prescription. But now? Brands have changed the game. Instead of the traditional route, you can meet with a provider through a quick virtual consultation—or skip the meeting entirely, depending on the platform—and have your prescription-strength retinoid delivered straight to your door.
First: Why tretinoin? “Tretinoin is the gold standard for improving skin texture and fine lines, but not all formulas are created equal,” says board-certified dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, MD. With different strengths and added ingredients to buffer irritation, today’s prescription retinoid creams are more accessible and customizable than ever. Whether you’re a first-time user looking for a gentler start or ready to level up your routine or strength, these are the best tretinoin creams worth considering—without the hassle of waiting for a dermatologist appointment.

Tretinoin is the only retinoid officially approved for treating signs of aging, explains board-certified dermatologist Brian Hibler, MD. If you’re looking to boost collagen production, keep skin firm and smooth, or improve texture, fine lines, and discoloration—things Dr. Hibler affirms tretinoin can do—keep scrolling for our top prescription retinoid cream picks.
Best Overall: Agency by Curology Future Formula
Why we love it: Curology, the pioneer of custom skincare, won a Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award back in 2021 for being the first brand to connect patients with dermatologists via telemedicine for personalized acne treatments. A few years later, its sister brand Agency was launched to do the same thing—but this time around, with tretinoin to address signs of aging like fine lines and firmness with the Future Formula. The process is super straightforward: You take a quick skin quiz, upload a few selfies, and a licensed dermatology provider creates a custom formula just for you. The treatment may include other actives, depending on your skin’s needs—and if something isn’t working or you want to tweak your formula? You get monthly check-ins to make adjustments.
Heads up: Curology now offers HydroTret, a prescription-only tretinoin cream that pairs the retinoid with dexpanthenol (a moisturizing ingredient) and niacinamide (which calms inflammation). The combination makes it easier on skin, allowing more people with sensitive or reaction skin to use it.
Tester feedback: "This made me so at ease with my skin journey," former Allure beauty editor Devon Abelman says. "It puts everything my skin needs—over-the-counter and prescription ingredients—in one simple bottle."
Additional ingredients: azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, niacinamide, dexpanthenol | Fragrance-free: yes
Best Customizable: Ro Custom Rx Treatment
Why we love it: Every two months with Ro’s Custom Rx Treatment, you’ll get a customized tretinoin–based cream made just for your skin—because no two skin types are the same. Depending on your needs, the formula can include ingredients to tackle discoloration, inflammation, or dryness, like hydrating hyaluronic acid and strengthening ceramides. And if tretinoin tends to leave your skin feeling dry—a common side effect—you can add the Enriching Cream for $16, a fragrance-free moisturizer designed to keep irritation at bay.
Tester feedback: “Ro is my favorite telehealth service to use across the board for many healthcare concerns,” says contributing writer Siena Gagliano. “The Custom Rx specifically, though, has been a game changer for my skin. I started at a low dose with a formula filled with ceramides and humectants and—along with the Enriching Cream—I haven’t had any irritation so far.”
Additional ingredients: azelaic acid, tranexamic acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid | Fragrance-free: yes
Best for Mature Skin: Nurx Tretinoin Cream
Why we love it: Nurx’s Tretinoin Cream is as straightforward as it gets—just a pure, prescription-strength retinoid in 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1% concentrations, with the latter packing the highest punch. Since it’s free of added ingredients, it’s a great option for mature skin or anyone looking for a no-frills formula that delivers results. The process couldn’t be easier: Fill out an online medical consultation form, have it reviewed by a licensed provider, and if approved, you’ll get a three-month supply delivered to your door. But the best part? Depending on your insurance plan and skin diagnosis, it might even be covered.
Additional ingredients: none | Fragrance-free: yes
Best for Crow’s Feet: Musely The Eye Serum
Why we love it: As collagen and elastin decline with age, fine lines start creeping in—especially around your eyes, where the skin is most delicate. The tretinoin you use on the rest of your face? Probably too harsh for this fragile area. That’s where Musely’s Eye Serum comes in with the first (and only) prescription retinoid eye cream on the market. With just 0.001% tretinoin—a super low dose—it’s designed to be effective with minimal irritation. It’s also packed with caffeine, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C to target crow’s feet, fine lines, and puffiness.
Additional ingredients: caffeine, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C | Fragrance-free: yes
Best for Acne: Hers Prescription Acne Cream
Why we love it: Retinoids are the gold standard of skincare for a reason—not only do they help smooth fine lines, but they’re also powerhouse ingredients for tackling acne. When you go with the Hers Prescription Acne Cream, you’re getting a customized formula with tretinoin designed specifically to target breakouts. But it doesn’t stop there—this treatment also works to calm inflammation, reduce redness, and fade stubborn acne scars over time. It’s a holistic approach to clearer, healthier skin, all in one easy-to-use formula.
Additional ingredients: tretinoin, niacinamide, azelaic acid, clindamycin | Fragrance-free: yes
Best for Dark Spots: Wisp Firm Up! Wrinkle Cream
Why we love it: Wisp may be best known for sexual wellness, but its tretinoin cream is a hit for tackling discoloration and dark spots. The Firm Up! Wrinkle Cream formula pairs tretinoin (at a balanced 0.04% strength) with two powerhouse ingredients: Azelaic acid, which fights acne-causing bacteria while brightening uneven skin tone, and niacinamide, a go-to for smoothing and fading dark spots. It’s a well-rounded option for anyone looking to even out their complexion while getting the benefits of a prescription-strength retinoid.
Additional ingredients: azelaic acid, niacinamide | Fragrance-free: yes
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most effective tretinoin?
The most effective tretinoin isn’t just about choosing the highest strength—it’s all about finding what works for your skin. "The effectiveness of tretinoin depends on three main factors: the concentration, the formula, and your skin type,” says Dr. Shirazi. Prescription tretinoin typically comes in strengths between 0.02% to 0.1%, with higher concentrations being more potent leading to quicker results, but also potentially causing more irritation, she explains.
But remember, more potent doesn’t always equate to better effectiveness. “The higher the concentration, the stronger it is, but stronger does not mean better—the tradeoff is more redness and irritation,” says board-certified dermatologist Asmi Berry, DO. The trick is to choose a formula that plays well with your skin’s needs, balancing potency and comfort for the best outcome.
Is 0.05% tretinoin stronger than 1% retinol?
"The 0.05% tretinoin is much stronger than 1% retinol,” says Dr. Berry, adding that this is because tretinoin is already in its active form (i.e., retinoic acid), so it works immediately when applied to the skin. “Retinol must be converted to retinoic acid in the skin, which means it's weaker and takes longer to see results compared to tretinoin." Translation? Essentially, tretinoin is more potent because it doesn’t require the conversion process, delivering faster and more noticeable results. While 1% retinol might sound stronger, it won’t have the same immediate effects as tretinoin, especially for more significant concerns like fine lines and discoloration.
Can I use 0.1% tretinoin every day?
A 0.1% tretinoin formula is the strongest potency available, so incorporating it into your skincare routine should be done gradually over time. In most cases, you’ll have worked your way up, starting at a low dose. Dr. Hibler says that he encourages his patients to try to use tretinoin every day because it’s incredibly effective when used consistently. But Dr. Shirazi suggests easing into it with a method called Retinol Staging if you’ve just started a 0.1% concentration, you’re going up on any dose, or you’re just beginning tretinoin in general.
According to Dr. Shirazi, the technique involves breaking your routine into two stages: First, cleanse and moisturize, then wait a bit before applying tretinoin at bedtime. This way, your skin’s moisture barrier is prepped before using the tretinoin, which can help reduce irritation while still letting the formula work its magic. "Unlike retinol sandwiching,” another common retinoid application method, she says, “this technique doesn’t reduce the effectiveness of the retinol because the moisturizer has already been absorbed and your skin barrier is strengthened before applying retinol on its own."

How we test and review products
When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing every product included in each review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.
For our list of the best tretinoin creams, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers, editors, and contributors, determined that every product excelled in each category—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.
Our staff and testers
A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.
After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
