Frequently Asked Questions

What is scalp psoriasis?

It's pretty safe to say that scalp problems of any nature, including itchiness and flaking, are extremely annoying to anyone who suffers from them. But scalp psoriasis — a common condition characterized by thick, red, scaly patches of skin that can cover the entire scalp and be chronic — is arguably one of the most painful and inconvenient. This condition is one of the many types of psoriasis, a disorder that New York City board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD previously described to Allure as an irritated reaction from the immune system to the skin, leading to red, scaly plaques and a rash-like reaction.

To explain further, Tsippora Shainhouse, MD a board-certified dermatologist in Beverly Hills and a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California, told Allure that this condition "is a genetic, autoimmune, inflammatory condition in which your skin cells divide too quickly and do not shed quickly enough." The extra cells that don't shed quickly enough form inflamed, scaly plaques on skin. The condition's symptoms usually manifest on skin, but, according to Shainhouse, psoriasis is also associated with other diseases including psoriatic arthritis, metabolic syndrome, elevated triglycerides, increased risk for heart disease, and obesity. Psoriasis, which can range from moderate to severe cases, is considered a chronic disease, which means flare-ups can come and go throughout your lifetime.

What psoriasis treatments are available without a prescription?

We would never say that any at-home remedy could ever replace a full consultation with a board-certified dermatologist, but if you want over-the-counter finds that'll temporarily ease symptoms before your appointment, you've come to the right page. Though they won't necessarily get to the root and treat scalp psoriasis, they'll provide some soothing, calming flare-up relief.

Those currently diagnosed with scalp psoriasis want to aim for a formula that simultaneously sloughs away flakes while soothing irritation. New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Sejal Shah, MD says you should look for treatment options with ingredients such as salicylic acid and coal tar, which is a dark liquid by-product of coke (another derivative of coal, not the kind you drink) and coal gas and is used in medications to treat psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Coal tar may sound scary, but dermatologists like Dr. Shah say it significantly helps to slow the rapid growth of skin cells while reducing inflammation.

Beyond active ingredients, board-certified, Connecticut-based dermatologist Kim Nichols, MD says making a few lifestyle adjustments is also important to the treatment of psoriasis. "First and foremost, reducing stressors will help to reduce psoriasis symptoms," she says. "Limiting alcohol consumption, smoking cessation, and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle can help minimize symptoms."

To make things easier, you can always peruse the National Psoriasis Foundation's directory of products that have its Seal of Recognition, which highlights over-the-counter products that have been created or intended to be non-irritating and safe for those with psoriasis.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best over-the-counter scalp psoriasis treatments, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from dermatolgists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors — in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon — is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the “best” for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We’re proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
